Percocet Addiction

Percocet is a prescription drug prescribed for patients needing relief of moderate to moderately severe forms of pain. The drug is a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen and a narcotic pain reliever. Acetaminophen is the less powerful of the two drugs and is added to enhance the effects of oxycodone. Percocet can be used in the treatment of other medical conditions as determined by a licensed medical professional.

Percocet can be extremely habit-forming and should only be taken by the person for whom it was prescribed. The drug should never be shared or given to another person, especially those with a past history of addiction to drugs or alcohol. Keep the Percocet in a secure location where it is inaccessible by other people.

People taking Percocet can experience an allergic reaction which requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: breathing problems, hives, swelling of the face, hands, lips, throat and tongue. In addition to an allergic reaction, the following side effects warrant emergency medical attention as well:

  • Shallow breathing and heart rate
  • Feelings of lightheadedness; faintness
  • Confusion, mental clouding
  • Seizures
  • Nausea, stomach pains and cramping, appetite loss, itchy skin, dark urine, clay-colored stool and jaundice (yellowish tint to eyes and skin)

Percocet addiction is a serious medical condition which drives people to illegal activities in order to treat the addiction. Percocet when being misused can be taken in tablet form, chewed, crushed and snorted or injected. Addiction is one of the major risks associated with using any type of opioid medications, with prolonged use a tolerance can develop in as little as 2-3 weeks. With increased use, a person may experience feelings of restlessness and paranoia. An addictive drug activates the reward system of the brain and makes a person experience powerful physical and mental cravings, as the condition progresses a person will have to take increased doses of the drug to experience the same initial feelings.

There are certain signs that can be directly contributed to a Percocet addiction. Such signs include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Taking Percocet when it is not medically necessary
  • A rapid increase in the amount of Percocet taken
  • Doctor-shopping to accumulate more Percocet
  • Engaging in illegal behavior and activities to feed the addiction

Just as is the case with other types of prescription drugs, Percocet addiction is fast-becoming a serious and dangerous epidemic. Most people stumble into addiction by accident, falling victim to the grips of Percocet through no fault of their own. No matter if the addiction was created by accident or intentionally, treatment from a rehab facility is the only logical first step for those seeking to beat the problem.

Long-term Percocet addiction poses serious risks to a person’s health and well-being. Proper treatment of an addiction to Percocet should include a personalized treatment plan, counseling and therapy within the structure and safety of a rehabilitation facility.
