Drug Addiction
The threat of drug abuse is rising in the state of Minnesota. There are more and more people arrested for drug violations each year. The larger cities within the state are the main sources of the drug trafficking. Transportation systems only compound this issue. Mexican drug trafficking rings in these areas are the main sources for drugs such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis and meth. The traffickers use their own vehicles as well as public vehicles to transport the drugs into the state. Public delivery services like post offices are also often used in the transport of drugs though. The low level street thugs are the main sellers in the larger cities although, they are spreading to the small cities as well so that they can further their drug selling rings. Minnesota drug statistics show that with the high presence of drugs, there is also a high presence of drug abuse. The presence of both the drug dealers and drug abusers combined brings more destruction and damage than anyone can ever imagine.
Cocaine, mostly the crack version of it, is the biggest concern for law enforcement in the state of Minnesota. The drug is more popular in the cities and makes up the majority of the emergency room admissions in the state. The majority of cocaine found in the state comes from the southern border although crack is mostly produced in local areas or brought in from places like Chicago.
While both cocaine and crack are very dangerous when used, crack brings more violent crime and destruction related to its sale and use. Many people who become addicted to crack cannot get off the drug because they are not only mentally but also physically addicted to the drug. Due to the very quick high that the drug produces and its extremely addictive nature, people get hooked very quickly. People who abuse crack are driven by the drug and will stop at almost nothing to get it including harming family, friends and loved ones while in the drug hunt process. Drug dealers who are involved in dealing crack are brutal, vicious and will kill in order to protect their profits. Many of the crack dealers in the state are African Americans although there are smaller amounts of Hispanic dealers gaining more presence in the retail distribution of crack in the state.
Meth is rising above cocaine use in some areas throughout the state according to Minnesota drug statistics. This is highly linked to the Mexican drug traffickers that are transporting the drug into the state. In fact, the Mexican drug transporters are responsible for at least 80% of the meth that is present in the state. The meth is brought in from both California and Mexico by private and public transportation systems. Even though the majority of meth present here is brought in this way, the meth labs in the state are also slowly increasing. During 97, there were 21 meth labs busted and just 3 years later in 2000, there were 138. These astounding numbers mean that meth will become more available in the state as well as the numbers of people who are abusing it.
Minnesota drug statistics tell that heroin abuse is relatively low in the state although, the abuse of heroin has risen each year starting in the 1990s. During 99, there were 27 people who died from heroin overdose and the number rose to 36 in 2000. This doesnt even include statistics from other counties in the state. Drug treatment and emergency room admissions for heroin in the state are increasingly rising as well which further shows that the drug very well could be a major concern within a few years from now. Mexican black tar heroin is the type found most often in Minnesota and brought in by the Mexican drug traffickers from the southern border as well as big cities like Chicago.
Marijuana is the drug of choice in the state of Minnesota and is the drug that is most used as well. Drug treatment admissions for marijuana are greater than those of any other drug in the state. There are an increasing number of young residents abusing marijuana each year. Minnesota drug statistics show that during the year 1999, the state was in 8th place for the whole country with the most 12-17, 18-25 aged residents who had used marijuana in the previous month. Many people feel that the use of marijuana is not dangerous and this in turn creates a higher rate of usage.
Ecstasy and GHB use is high among the youth residents in Minnesota. These club drugs are typically used during parties that occur underground such as raves but are also becoming more common in schools and colleges. The use of these drugs is becoming more and more frequent with the youth residents and the overdose deaths are rising as well.
