Darvocet Addiction

Darvocet is a medication composed of acetaminophen and propoxyphene and is used to treat mild to moderate forms of pain. Propoxyphene bonds with the pain receptors in the human brain and blocks feelings of pain. Acetaminophen stops the production of prostaglandins which otherwise produce pain. Since Darvocet addiction can develop when taking the drug, it is important to follow physician’s orders and not take a higher dose at an increased frequency.

In 2009, at the urgency of a consumer advocate group Public Citizen, an advisory board for the Food and Drug Administration voted together to recommend banning Darvocet. The FDA has yet to make a definitive decision and the panel found Darvocet to offer weak pain relief and can lead a user to commit suicide. Adverse reactions, Darvocet addiction and accidental overdoses have all been reported among users.

Darvocet addiction is a condition that is progressive and grows to disproportionate levels over time. The nature of addiction grows, causing both great physical and mental danger for the user. An addiction to Darvocet can be highlighted by an intense withdrawal period which occurs when the medication is discontinued.

A fear of experiencing withdrawal is what keeps many users from giving up the drug. Symptoms of withdrawal from Darvocet include; fatigue, physical cravings, anxiety, diarrhea, aches and pains, nausea, vomiting, restlessness, shaking, sweating and paranoia. Other signs of addiction can include drug-seeking behavior and a mental preoccupation with how to go about getting the drug and continuing to use despite negative consequences to health and well-being.

A Darvocet addiction can be difficult to treat because the drug is a member of the opiate family, which means is causes both mental and physical addiction. A treatment center must be equipped to deal with the psychological, as well as physical problems that accompany addiction. While in treatment an addict should receive drug awareness information, addiction counseling, group, family or individual therapy and spiritual guidance if requested.

Addiction treatment can cause severe withdrawal symptoms for those who use Darvocet for a prolonged period of time. However, there is a wide array of options available such as an inpatient or outpatient treatment programs and detoxification facilities. Consulting with a medical professional who specializes in the treatment of drug addiction can help a person find the right program and overcome the grips of an addiction to Darvocet.

Treatment for an addiction to Darvocet can include a detoxification period which should always be supervised under the guidance and recommendations of medical professionals and a qualified team of rehabilitation staff. Withdrawal symptoms from discontinuing Darvocet occur within mere hours instead of days like with other medications, which is why it is important for a user to seek medical attention.

Darvocet is a dangerous drug, abuse and addiction can lead to irreversible health damage, overdose and in the worst case scenario, death. Addiction is a dangerous disease, but with the proper treatment and support, a person can become whole and healthy once again.
